Turning 26 in Texas: how to get your own health insurance

At 26 you lose a parent's plan, and that opens a 60-day window to enroll in your own. What to do, when coverage starts, and how your income affects the price.

Under federal law, young adults can stay on a parent's health plan until they turn 26. After that you need your own coverage — and losing a parent's plan gives you a 60-day Special Enrollment Period to get it, even outside Open Enrollment.

When you lose a parent's plan

Many plans end coverage at the end of the month you turn 26, but check with the plan — the date matters. You can apply for a Marketplace plan up to 60 days before that coverage ends, so there's no gap, and up to 60 days after.

Your income decides your price

If you file your own taxes, your premium tax credit is based on your own expected income for the year. At a first job, that often means a meaningful credit. Have a realistic estimate ready: the credit is reconciled with the IRS at tax time.

Working before 26 and still on the family tax return?

If you're under 26, working, and still claimed on your parents' return, your income is counted in the household's income. Sometimes that changes the family's tax credit. In some cases a separate plan works out better — it depends on the numbers, so it's worth checking both options.

What to compare

Look at the premium after your credit, the deductible and the out-of-pocket maximum together, and make sure your doctor and any prescriptions are covered. Our page for young adults walks through the dates, and the plan comparison tool shows plans for your ZIP code with your estimated price.

Losing coverage on a parent's plan is. You get a 60-day Special Enrollment Period, and you can apply up to 60 days before the coverage ends.

Will I get a tax credit?

It depends on your expected household income for the year and your household size. Many young adults at a first job qualify.
