What the subsidy really means

Many Marketplace clients qualify for a premium tax credit that can lower their monthly premium, based on household income and other eligibility factors. Many self-employed clients are shocked to learn what they actually pay after the subsidy.

Self-employed and don't know your exact income for next year? That's normal — we estimate it together, honestly and carefully, because the subsidy is reconciled with the IRS at tax time. If your income changes during the year, we update the application so there are no surprises.

This is exactly the part where a licensed broker earns their keep: the subsidy math, the income estimation and the paperwork are free with me - and mistakes here can be costly.

02

Premium, deductible, out-of-pocket max — the three numbers that matter

Premium

is what you pay monthly. Deductible is what you pay out of pocket before the insurance starts sharing costs. The out-of-pocket maximum is the most you pay in a year for covered in-network care before the plan pays 100% of covered in-network costs.

Health insurance in the U.S. is not about “free healthcare” — it's about protection from financial catastrophe. A broken arm or an ER visit can cost tens of thousands of dollars; the plan is what stands between that bill and your savings.

A $50/month plan with a $10,000 deductible vs. a $70/month plan with a $5,000 deductible: the $20 monthly saving becomes an extra $5,000 the day something happens. I compare the whole year's math for your realistic scenarios — not just the monthly price.

03

Bronze, Silver or Gold?

Metal tiers are about how you share costs with the insurer: Bronze plans generally have lower premiums and higher out-of-pocket costs; Gold plans generally have higher premiums and lower out-of-pocket costs, with Silver often in between. If you qualify based on income, Silver plans can unlock extra cost-sharing reductions that make them a great value for many families.

There's no universally “best” tier. A healthy 28-year-old and a family planning a pregnancy need different plans — maternity care, pediatric visits and specific prescriptions all change the answer. Marketplace plans cover pre-existing conditions, including pregnancy, and cannot charge you more for them.

Instead of scrolling through 30–50 near-identical plans on your own, tell me about your doctors, medications and budget - I'll bring back 2–3 options with clear numbers and tell you honestly how they differ.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How much will I pay? Can it really be almost free?

It depends on your household income and other eligibility factors. Many self-employed clients with moderate incomes pay a fraction of the sticker premium; some pay close to zero. The check takes minutes and costs nothing.

I'm self-employed and don't know my income for next year. What do I put?

We estimate together based on last year and your current situation. If reality changes mid-year we update the application — that's part of my after-enrollment support, and it helps reduce the risk of owing excess subsidy back at tax time.

Is this real ACA insurance, not some limited plan?

Yes — I enroll you in ACA-compliant Marketplace plans from licensed carriers. These plans cover pre-existing conditions, and I’ll happily show you the plan documents before you commit.

I lost my job / just moved to Texas. Do I have to wait for Open Enrollment?

Losing qualifying coverage, certain moves, marriage or having a baby may qualify you for a Special Enrollment Period, typically with a limited enrollment window.

Will my doctor take this plan?

I check your doctors, clinics and hospitals against each plan's network before you enroll — and your medications against the formulary. This is the single most valuable 20 minutes of the process.

Do I pay you anything?

No. There is no fee to you for my ACA consultation and enrollment assistance. If you enroll through me, I may receive compensation from the insurance company.
