Why high earners look at IUL
In the U.S., most people build retirement through IRA and 401(k) accounts. Both are capped by annual contribution limits, and withdrawals from traditional accounts are taxed. IUL is different on both counts: contributions aren't capped the same way, cash value grows tax-deferred. When properly structured and kept in force, an IUL may allow you to access accumulated cash value through policy loans without triggering current income tax.
That’s why IUL may be considered by doctors, attorneys, business owners and other high earners who have already maxed out their retirement plan contributions or are no longer eligible to make direct Roth IRA contributions.
The cash value is linked to an index (commonly the S&P 500®) with a floor: in a down year, negative index performance does not result in a negative index credit, while in an up year the policy can participate in index growth up to a cap. Potential for long-term cash value growth without direct market exposure
When to start — and why people open IULs for kids
Starting early
can make a huge difference. Some parents open IUL policies for their children while they’re still young, giving the cash value decades to grow. A relatively small amount set aside consistently can potentially grow into meaningful cash value over time — money the child may later access for college, a first home, starting a business, or even retirement — while the policy also provides permanent life insurance protection.
IUL can be a powerful but complex life insurance strategy - the details of caps, participation rates and policy design matter enormously. I'll build a custom illustration with your real numbers, walk you through every assumption, and tell you honestly whether IUL fits your situation or whether a simpler solution serves you better.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Is IUL an investment?
No — it's permanent life insurance with a cash value component linked to an index. Your money isn't invested in the market; the insurer credits interest based on index performance, with a floor and a cap. It complements — not replaces — investment accounts.
How is IUL different from a 401(k) or IRA?
Most Americans save for retirement through Traditional 401(k)s and IRAs. You get a tax break today (on a relatively small amount), but pay taxes when you take the money out later (on a much larger amount). IUL takes a different approach: you fund it with money you’ve already paid taxes on, and when properly structured, you can potentially access the cash value later without current income tax. Think of it as paying tax on the seed instead of the harvest — while also protecting your family with life insurance.
Can I lose money if the market crashes?
The indexed crediting strategy typically has a 0% floor, so negative index performance does not result in a negative index credit. Policy charges still apply, so cash value can still decrease. That’s why honest illustration and policy design matter - I’ll show you conservative scenarios, not just sunny ones.
Does IUL make sense for a child?
For long horizons, it can offer decades of potential cash value accumulation and permanent life insurance coverage established at a young age. The accumulated cash value may later be accessed for needs such as education, a first home or retirement. We’ll run the numbers for your family.
