COBRA or Marketplace
COBRA or a Marketplace plan — compare before you decide
COBRA lets you keep your work plan, but you pay the whole premium yourself. A Marketplace plan may cost far less after the tax credit — or more, if your income is high or you’ve already met this year’s deductible. Roman lays both out side by side so you can decide with real numbers.
What to know first
Three things that change which plan is right for you.
When COBRA can win
You’ve met most of your deductible this year, you’re mid-treatment, or your income is too high for a tax credit.
When the Marketplace can win
Your income dropped, you qualify for a tax credit, or your family needs coverage for many months.
Keep your doctors
Check your doctors against the Marketplace plan networks before you let COBRA go.

Questions people ask
Can I switch from COBRA to a Marketplace plan later?
During Open Enrollment, yes. Mid-year, only when COBRA runs out or another life event applies — dropping it voluntarily usually doesn’t qualify.
Does the Marketplace count my severance?
Your tax credit is based on expected income for the whole year, so severance and new income both matter. Roman helps you estimate it.
How fast do I need to decide?
Within 60 days of losing coverage for the Marketplace. COBRA also gives you 60 days to elect.
