Lost job-based coverage
Lost your health insurance? You may not have to wait
Losing job-based coverage usually opens a Special Enrollment Period: 60 days to pick a Marketplace plan, outside Open Enrollment. You can even apply up to 60 days before coverage ends, so there’s no gap. Roman confirms you qualify, compares plans with your doctors, and handles the application.
What to know first
Three things that change which plan is right for you.
Compare with COBRA
COBRA keeps your plan but you pay the full price. A Marketplace plan with a tax credit is often much cheaper.
Income changed? Good to know
Your credit is based on expected income for the year — a job loss can mean a larger credit.
Proof may be needed
HealthCare.gov may ask for a letter showing your coverage ended. Roman tells you what to have ready.
Two ways to get it done
Pick the one that suits you. You can start on your own and ask Roman anytime.

Questions people ask
I was offered COBRA. Can I still get a Marketplace plan?
Yes. Being offered COBRA doesn’t stop you from using your Special Enrollment Period. If you start COBRA and later drop it on your own, that usually doesn’t open a new window.
When does my new plan start?
Usually the first day of the month after you pick a plan. If you apply before your old coverage ends, it can start right after.
What if I missed the 60 days?
You’d generally wait for Open Enrollment, unless another life event applies. Open Enrollment runs Nov 1 – Jan 15.
